Naturopathic Diabetes Care

Diabetes is a growing epidemic affecting more than three million Canadians. With an estimated 285 million people worldwide affected by diabetes, it is currently a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.
Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus) is a metabolic disorder caused by the body’s inability to sufficiently produce and/or properly use insulin, resulting in high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The body uses sugar (glucose) as its primary source of energy and is normally tightly controlled by metabolic hormones such as insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas (beta cells (β-cells) of the islets of Langerhans) to control blood sugar. It allows the body to properly utilize glucose for energy, store glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscle, and prevent the usage of fat as an energy source. When there is a lack of insulin or a failure in insulin control, diabetes will result.

If improperly managed and untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death. Complications can include:

  • Kidney disease

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Eye disease

  • Nerve damage (neuropathy)

  • Impotence

Therefore, it is important to manage the disease effectively and lower the risk of complications.
