Stretch Marks and Striae

Striae, commonly known as “stretch marks” is essentially scar formation in the skin tissue when skin sustains injury from being stretched beyond its natural elastic capacity. This usually arises from rapid growth or weight gain as a result of puberty, pregnancy or hormone therapy such as steroid use.

Contributing factors to striae formation can also be inadequate nutrition which leads to compromised ability for the skin to heal (after injury from excessive stretching). So for the prevention of striae in those who are at risk of this (eg pregnant women), a well-balanced diet with an emphasis on nutrients such as zinc and vitamin C is important. Topically, adequate hydration of the skin with ingredients that have skin healing properties such as shea butter and coconut oil can also make a tremendous difference.

While striae is difficult to get rid of completely, Acupuncture can effectively promote new skin regeneration, thereby helping to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. When combined with topical application of healing oils and systemic supplementation of nutraceuticals, the results can be even more profound.
